Scone golf report: Oct 22-29

In a big weekend of golf at Scone the men’s championships for 2023 concluded. Wes Boyd won his first Scone Club Championship with great golf over four rounds shooting par or better in each round. His final round of 72 on Sunday, October 29 and a total of 282, enabled him to win convincingly by eleven shots to runner up Matt Hobbs. This is also the best four round score in the Championships on the revised course since 2019.

The B Grade Champion was Clayton Rogers who had 326 to finish four shots ahead of Mick Soper. In C Grade the winner was Seb Curry who posted his best scores ever during the championships and finished three shots ahead of runner up Robert Ryan. Seb did the double by winning the overall nett event, The Ray Weekes Cup on 269 by ten shots to Jake Teague. The Senior Champion was Mick Alsleben from David O’Donnell. The A Grade nett winner was Jake Teague from Mac Dawson, the B Grade nett was won by Clayton Rogers from unlucky Bardie Badenhorst and Mick Soper who were both beaten on a countback! The C Grade nett winner was Robert Ryan from Sid Collison and the Senior nett event went to David O’Donnell by two shots to Charlie Manning.

In the daily events, on Saturday, October 28 the players contested the annual Herb Phelps Memorial Day sponsored by Bill Pumpa. There were again some great rounds on a course which had welcomed some rain on Friday. The winner of the day was Jake Teague who had a fabulous round of 64 nett. Scott Reid’s 66 nett won him the second prize and Brad Baker’s 67 nett rounded out the prizes on a countback from Jock O’Connor. Balls went to these players plus Matt Hobbs, Geoff Barton 68, Seb Curry 69, Mick Reynolds 70, Rod Vaughan, David O’Donnell 71, Mac Dawson, Luke Stevens, Andrew Dick, Michael Robinson, Jim Hobbs, Steve Morse, Clayton Rogers 73 and Mick Soper 74 nett on a countback from Col Solway, Michael Morton, Wes Boyd and Alan Wood.
As usual players needed to be close to win the Domino’s Pizza NTP’s! Wes Boyd won the 4th at 1.00 metre; Jake Teague the 8th at 0.52 metres (Jackpot) and another on the 17th at 4.74 metres; Garry Carter the 13th at 1.23 metres.

On Sunday, October 29 in ideal playing conditions the Phelps Family prizes were on offer. Again sub-par nett rounds were required to win the day and each grade. Garry Carter was the winner with 68 nett, closely followed by Clayton Rogers 69 nett to win A Grade, Charlie Manning 71 nett to win B Grade and Seb Curry 69 nett to win C Grade. Balls were won by these players along with Mac Dawson, Jake Teague 70, Charlie Manning, Mick Alsleben 71, Mick Soper, Scott Reid and Robert Ryan 73 nett. The best shots on the par 3’s were by Bardie Badenhorst 3.4 metres on the 4th; Mick Alsleben 5.07 metres on the 8th; Jono Keep 2.17 metres on the 13th and Wes Boyd 2.65 metres on the 17th.

The ladies played an 18 Hole Stableford sponsored by Julie Leckie on Thursday, October 26 in cold and windy conditions with a mizzle of rain. It was also the Medal of Medals playoff sponsored by Melanie’s Jewellers. The daily winner and the winner of the Medal playoff was Annie Woods who continued her fine form with 38 points and a nett score of 70. Barb Hobbs was beaten on a countback for runner up on the day.

In a very close event for the Medal playoff Annie won by one to three others Fiona Simson, Lyn Banks and Cath Payne who all had 71 nett. Fiona Simson won the NTP on the 8th and balls went to Annie Woods, Barb Hobbs, Cath Payne, Sue Williams 38, Fiona Simson, Lyn Banks and Louise Mathews 37 points.,To conclude the day the final of the Julie Leckie Putting Championship was played with Dordie Bragg having a close win over Mary Brennan.

This week at Scone golfers can enjoy an 18 Hole Individual and 2 Ball Aggregate Stableford on Thursday November 2 for the ladies, sponsored by Nickie Cramsie and Leanda Nutt. An 18 Hole Individual and 2Ball Stableford from the Red tees will be played on Saturday, November 4 sponsored by Brad Baker. As usual the midweek competition will conclude on Friday, November 3. On Monday, October 30 the Mixed Pennant team will play against Kurri at Dungog. Members are reminded that the season will be celebrated with the annual Presentation Night on Saturday, November 18.
