POLICE have held a media conference in Lismore, in relation to the death of a woman in her 60s at Sydney Street, Muswellbrook yesterday.

Police initially attended the address at 7:20am yesterday regarding a concern for welfare, and spoke with a 52 year old woman.

At 7pm police were called to the Muswellbrook Workers Club, where they interviewed the same 52 year old woman, who was suffering a mental health episode outside the Club. Police subsequently arrested the woman and she was taken to the mental health facility of the Marter Hospital.

At 8:30pm, police were called back to the address in Sydney Street and found the body of a woman believed to be in her 60s.

The cause of the woman’s death is undetermined, however police confirmed there “appeared to be some kind of physical intervention.”

While the deceased has not been positively identified, police believe they know the identity of the victim.

Police further believe the two woman knew each other, but are yet to determine the nature of their relationship.

They have further confirmed the 52 year old in the Marter Hospital is under police guard.

Police were unable to confirm if the woman in her 60s, now deceased, was sighted by police when they attended the address that morning.

There is also an investigation by Post Stephens-Hunter Police District into police management of the matter.
