Entries open for 2021 Scone Art Prize

Filed in Just In by July 8, 2021

THE Scone Art Prize is boasting thousands of dollars in prize money this year, with the overall winner to walk home with a whopping $5,000.

Entries are now open until August 13, with all works to be sent to Scone Arts and Craft by August 27, to be judged by Muswellbrook Gallery Director, Ellissa Emmerson on Friday, September 3.

There will be six art categories this year and each entrant is only permitted to enter a maximum of three works per section.

Sections include:

  1. The Bobbie Paradice overall first prize for work in any medium;
  2. Watercolour;
  3. Print or drawing;
  4. Miniature;
  5. Ceramics and Sculpture;
  6. Pastel.

Roger Skinner, event organiser and local artist said this year will also hold a special $2,500 memorial prize in honour of the late Frans Kerkner.

“Frans Kurnker was Eula Berling’s partner and Frans died three years ago. Eula decided to keep Frans contact with Scone and donate the money in honour of her memory,” Mr Skinner said.

“The Frans Kurkner Memorial prize will only go a local artist from the Upper Hunter or Muswellbrook Shires,” he said.

“Two and a half grand is not to be sneezed at either. It’s a really lovely gesture and while we really appreciate it, it’s just lovely for him to do that,” he said.

Robert Thurgood has graciously sponsored the youth prize and David Paradice has donated the massive $5,000 top prize in honour of his father Bobbie Paradice.

The 2021 Scone Art Prize grand opening will be held on Friday, September 3 at Scone Art and Crafts on Kingdon Street, with refreshments Sponsored by Savannah Estate.

The opening won’t be a ticketed event, instead a $15 admission fee will be available for purchase at the door.

The exhibition will then be opened to the public on Sunday, September 12 and can be viewed during the Scone Art and Crafts opening hours between 10am and 4pm.

Mr Skinner encouraged all artists, professional or aspiring, to enter the Scone Art Prize competition.

“Enter because if you don’t enter, you won’t ever know how good you are,” said Mr Skinner.
