Scone Golf Report: July 15
By Julie Leckie
LAST Thursday the ladies were playing for the Jo Brown Trophy in an 18 Hole Individual Stableford event in addition to the inaugural Coloured Ball Team Challenge played as teams of three. Despite chilly and windy conditions everyone set off in good spirits trying to unravel the rules of the Coloured Ball Challenge. In summary, each team player took it in turns to play a coloured ball with the score recorded on a separate Coloured Ball Card in addition to their own individual card. The Coloured Ball Stableford score was added to the next best Stableford score in the team to form the Best Ball aggregate score for the Coloured Ball Team result. Confused?? It is fair to say when seeing the results on the cards back in the club house, most were!! To add to the confusion, the crows took a particular liking to the coloured balls with most ending up in a crows nest far away from the golf course!! In all, it was loads of fun and the results for the day were as follows. Winner of the Individual Stableford playing for the Jo Brown Trophy was Narelle Rutter with a fabulous round of 40pts, followed by Julie Leckie a distant second with 32pts. Jo Brown and Annie Woods came in next both on a score of 31pts. Our Coloured Ball Team Challenge was taken out by Annie Woods and Judy Carmody, with Narelle Rutter a handy ‘mystery swinger’ making up the third team member, to produce a great result of 80pts which was well ahead of the rest of the teams.
On Friday Judy Carmody, Noreen Marshall, Annie Woods and Julie Leckie went on tour to play in the Hawks Nest Irish Foursome Open Day. It transpired to be well worth the journey returning home as the winning team beating around 20 teams from the Hunter River District, Central Coast District and Newcastle District. They were just a little bit happy and excited!! To top the day off Noreen Marshall and Julie Leckie took out the straightest drive in Div 3 and Div 1 respectively.
Next Thursday we play for the Thoroughbred Hotel 18 Hole Stableford Trophy. Also good luck to all the ladies starting to play the first round of the Peter & Marg Mashall Knock Out.
On Saturday, the Scone Golf Club played an individual Stableford competition for the Scott Reid Trophy. Numbers were reduced, perhaps due to weather, but we did experience a couple of firsts on our new course – there was a rain shower in the morning and a gale force wind in the afternoon. The 27 players had a change from the relatively benign conditions we have had so far but the additional challenge was not reflected in the scores. Tony O’Neill won the day with 38 points on a countback from Matt Hobbs. The downwind holes played much shorter but into the wind par was difficult enough. Matt Hobbs and Matt O’Donnell carded 5 birdies each so there must have been some up and down golf played.
Just hitting the green was difficult from the 17th tee and nobody could get close to the pin. Mick Alsleben won the prize with a 6 metre effort. Nearest on the 4th/13th was Andy Phelps. Balls were awarded to Matt Hobbs (38 points) Matt O’Donnell (37 points), Mick Alsleben, Phil McGuirk and Tony Pringle (36 points). Next week we have a 2Ball Stableford multiplier for the Scott Shann and Duncan Yuille Trophy. The timesheet is now on the wall at the golf club along with the Kevans Knockout draw.
