WHAT began as an idea for a small community even in Aberdeen has grown over nine years to attract bands, dancers, strong men and tourists from around the country.

The Aberdeen Highland Games has been supported by BHP each year since it began to the tune of $43,000 and volunteer staff to do some of the heavy lifting on the day to set up and take down the event.

Deidre Tindall, lead corporate affairs BHP Mt Arthur said the Aberdeen Highland Games was one of their favourite community events.

“We’ll be putting the word out to our employees letting them know what kind of volunteer activities exist for the day and then hopefully get a lot of employees come out to celebrate the Highland Games,” said Ms Tindall.

“It’s such a great event for us to support knowing that so many employees think so highly of it and enjoy the Games themselves,” she said.

“It’s just a great community event it’s attended by so many local residents, employees, a great celebration of culture and in terms of events that we can support, this ticks all of the right boxes for us,” she said.

“If our involvement can help in any way to bring more people out to this event then that is fantastic,” Deidre Tindall.

Charles Cooke, president of the Aberdeen Highland Games said he was grateful to have such a supportive sponsor.

“They are a wonderful organisation who have supported us for many years and without the likes of Mount Arthur we wouldn’t be running,” he said.

“And each year we donate money back to the volunteer organsiations that help us put on the Games, so the money from the Games helps many organisations in the community,” Charles Cooke said.
