Everyone Walked Away

JUST before midnight a northbound car careered off the New England Highway south of Scone, exactly opposite the Strathearn Park Lodge accommodation driveway, hitting a power pole in a paddock.

The driver from Maitland, who only wanted to be identified by her first name Jeanette, said the car completely locked up.

“The car just completely locked up and there was nothing I could do,” said Jeanette.

“You can see the tyre marks through here (she pointed to the tracks from the road to the pole) and they are dead straight, I couldn’t turn it,” she said.

“We went through one, two, three fences before we hit the pole, it all happened in a split second,” Jeanette said.

Jeanette’s two sons were in the car at the time and all walked away unharmed.

When they returned to the vehicle at approximately 8:30am they found that people had already begun stripping their car, with the radio and car jack missing.

They returned to the site of the accident just before 1pm to retrieve other items from the car, which is when a concerned passerby called emergency services and activated local fire and ambulance units.

Jeanette said lots of people had stopped to check if they were alright and said it must have looked frightening to passersby to see the accident site and people in the car.

“I guess with us being in the car, pulling things out people thought the accident had just happened, but we are all ok, we all walked away thank goodness,” Jeanette said.
