Two Scone businesses go the extra mile

Filed in editorletters, Just In by June 24, 2021

I LIVE in Sydney. My very old and dear friend was sadly travelling today from Sydney to Scone and staying overnight in Scone, before recommencing their journey to attend her Uncle’s funeral in Armidale tomorrow.

I wanted to arrange a surprise bottle of champagne for her when she arrived in Scone at her accommodation.

This champagne was so she knew I was thinking of her at this sad time and to help her celebrate the beautiful life and memories she had of her Uncle.

I called the accommodation she told me she was staying at, The Colonial Motor Lodge Scone. I explained the situation to the very helpful staff.

They suggested I contact a local bottle shop for the champagne, even suggesting that if the bottle shop could not deliver, then they would even pick up for me.

They said they were very happy to assist with ensuring it gets delivered to my friend’s room for her arrival.  They suggested the liquor store, Cellarbrations at Scone to purchase the champagne.

I contacted Cellarbrations Scone and the fabulous staff member assisted with my request and even to include a card with the bottle. They requested I pay via bank account BSB etc.

The phone line was poor and crackly so I said I would send an email to confirm the message I wanted to include in a card, their BSB and Account details to check I had this transcribed correctly before payment. They were they were going to send me the invoice as well.

I emailed but did not hear back, so I called again last night.  I was told I would need to speak to a staff member today and they would call me today.

I was busy working today and I had not received any calls and thought I would follow up at lunch.  Well, work being work, the day passes and it is now past 6pm.

My heart sank as I realised I had now forgotten. I suddenly got a beautiful message from my friend and photos of a gorgeous wrapped bottle of champagne in an ice bucket, with ice, glasses, and a lovely gift card.

This was in her room for her. It bought her to tears and me to tears reading her message.

What is so wonderful is that Cellarbrations had arranged as discussed.  I was still waiting on the payment details from them to be confirmed.

Of course the payment will be done first thing tomorrow, but I am so touched that these businesses have taken the extra step to help someone during a time of such sadness.

This community spirit typifies what we all love and admire so much about country towns.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me!  And helping to put some sparkle in my friend’s day.

The extra yard that these businesses went to help a complete stranger is so greatly appreciated.
