What to Take
When camping around the Upper Hunter, visitors should always think about weather, location, food, availability of water and firewood, and safety.
Always take plenty of food and drink, as most camp sites are not located near shops.
Drinking water is needed when camping at the Washpools camping area, located in Towarri National Park, Barrington Tops National Park and State Forest, and Stewarts Brook State Forest.
During Winter, visitors need to be prepared for extremely cold weather at any camp site throughout the Upper Hunter. Warm clothing and bed linen are a must! Due to the high altitude, the Barrington Tops can reach low temperature at any time of the year so always pack warm bedding and clothing.
Firewood is needed at Barrington Tops National Park and State Forest, Belmadar camping area at Moonan Flat, Lake Glenbawn, and Stewarts Brook State Forest. Don’t forget the marshmallows!
Many campers love travelling with their four-legged friends. There are dog-friendly camp sites in the Upper Hunter, including Moonan Brook and Moonan Flat camping areas, Barrington Tops State Forest, Lake Glenbawn and Stewarts Brook State Forest.
Other items to remember include fishing rods, bait, first aid kit, hats and suscreen and shoes suitable for long, scenic walks.
