Vote to Lift Moonan Flat
THE community of Moonan Flat are in the running for a community grant worth $109,000 to implement a village water system and renovate the heart of their community the Soldier’s Memorial Hall, but they need your support to vote for their project – “Lifting the Moonan Flat”.
Please note: This is not a Council matter. The funding applied for by community groups is from the state government. Community groups in our local area are also competing against groups from throughout the Upper Hunter electorate – which includes Muswellbrook and Singleton areas. Which projects are given funding by the state government is dependent on voting.
The water system consists of a large gravity fed tank in the town, which could supply fast flow water point for the rural fire service in an emergency and supply the town’s hall, porting fields and public gardens with water, Kath McLoughlin, secretary of the Upper Hunter Moonan Mummer’s explained.
“It’s expected that this project will lift our community spirit through this impossible drought, make our little village more active, beautiful, and safe, and ensure the ongoing use of our brilliant sports ground and hall,” said Ms McLoughlin.
“We had two main projects we wanted to do, but we combined them, so that people didn’t feel they needed to vote for one or the other and split the vote,” she said.
“It’s quite a massive project we’ve applied for, but it wills secure a village water system, so all of our halls and sports grounds and churches they don’t have any water and we have nowhere for our rural fire service to fill up during an emergency,” she said.
“It will mean that we’ll actually be able to plant trees at the hall and things like that which we haven’t been able to do, but the key thing is the water for the fire service,” Kath McLoughlin said.
If the grant is successful, the Soldier’s Memorial Hall will also be able to undergo renovations including paint the interior of the hall, build a storage shed, and install new stage curtains for the much loved Moonan Mummers.
Ten volunteer groups from Moonan have banded together including the Hall Trustees, Upper Hunter Mummers, Moonan Rural Fire Service, Recreation Reserve Trustees, Upper Hunter Sports Club, Tennis Club, Croquet Club, Pony Club, Moonan Catholic and Union Churches and the Toybox.
