Vigil for Women in Scone
SCONE will shine a light on domestic violence in May and be part of a national candlelight vigil to coincide with National Remembrance Day.
The Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre has joined forces with the Upper Hunter Homeless Support and local Council to organise the vigil.
Lee Watts, manager of the Neighbourhood Centre said there are many women and families subjected to domestic violence in the Upper Hunter and on average one woman a week loses her life to domestic violence.
“The level of domestic violence in our country is not acceptable and the candle light vigil gives us all an opportunity t show our support and also the need to work together to make change,” said Mrs Watts.
“Domestic violence is something that is just as rife in our community as any other, it does not matter what your background is, how much you earn, where you live this is something that is throughout all levels of our society,” she said.
“It is important for victims to know there is help out there an services like ours can be the first step in learning what support is available,” she said
“It is also important for the perpetrators to seek help, because there are tools to help them and by helping one perpetrator it can spare a lifetime of women from abuse,” Lee Watts said.
The Scone Singer, Policce and community representatives will be at the vigil and the community are invited to bring along a non-perishable food item for the pantry at the Upper Hunter Homeless Support.
