Vaulting Gains Momentum

VAULTING is gaining in popularity outside the vaulting community with large crowds visiting the event at Turanville over the weekend.

Vaulters have set compulsory moves which they must complete on horseback but can then express their artistic talents in the freestyle section.

Organiser Robyn Boyle was pleased with the amount of spectators to this years event and the distances vaulters have travelled to compete at this event.

“We were overwhelmed with the amount of public spectators, we had phone calls from Newcastle and Gunnedah and usually when you do sports your spectators are mainly a greater percentage of supporters of the competitors but we had masses and it was really great to see that, it’s because it is an entertaining sport,” said Ms Boyle.

“We have 75 vaulters from Queensland, Byron Bay, the Riverina, the Southern Highlands, Canberra, the Hunter Valley and we had sixteen locals competing, our club is really strong and probably the biggest club strength wise in Australia.”

“We cater foe people of all abilities and it is one of the sports that cater for athletes with a disability….and to watch them grow through being with the horse in their self esteem and self confidence and being able to do things it’s really positive.”
The vaulting community wants to attract as many people as possible to promote the sport so young children are brought by their parents to start the process, Skye Bennett from Scone brought her daughter Ella to compete for the first time at this years event after only being introduced to the sport eight weeks ago.

“I was so nervous, I was more nervous than Ella…the comradery is just fantastic and they are all just great mates, it’s really nice to see this sport up and running,” Skye Bennett said.
