Unnecessary Farce in Moonan
IN 1969 big things were happening, the Beatles performed their last live concert, Australia withdrew from Vietnam and on the home front the Moonan Mummer’s trod the boards for the first time.
The show has gone on every year for the last 50 years, through droughts, depression, prosperity, floods, market crashes, bumper seasons and bush fires and this year they will perform a two-act comedy “Unnecessary Farce” by Paul Slade Smith.
Two founding members will lead the troupe this year Warwick Mitchell is producing the play and Tim Mcloughlin is part of the cast. The other cast members include Sally Mitchell, Matt Granger, Kath McLoughlin, Liam McLoughlin, Lewis King and Anne Mitchell and it is directed by Warwick Mitchell an Serena White.
Synposis: Two cops. Three crooks. Eight doors. In a cheap motel room, an embezzling Mayor is supposed to meet with his female accountant, while in the room next door, two undercover cops wait to catch the meeting on videotape. But there’s some confusion as to who’s in which room, what’s being videotaped, who’s taken the money, who’s hired a hit-man and why the accountant keeps taking her clothes off!
There are four performances, with two already sold out (May 25 and 31), so people are encouraged to get their tickets quickly. The performance on the May 25 sold out within an hour!
During the last 10 years the Upper Hunter Mummers have donated more than $85,000 to local charities such as the Scone and District Cancer Support Group, Upper Hunter Education Fund, Scott Memorial Hospital, Muswellbrook Oncology and supported facilities at the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall in Moonan Flat.
