Town Prepares for Touch
CONSIDERING Scone is a town of 5,000 people, having 1,000 people playing in the touch football competition is remarkable.
David Casson, member of the Scone Touch Association committee said when the teams play in away competitions other towns are amazed at the number of players from Scone.
“It’s easily the largest sporting competition in Scone, we usually have around 50 seniors teams play at the Bill Rose Sport Complex, there are 12 or 13 fields going in the one time slot so there are about 24 games played on a night,”said Mr Casson.
“We have a mixed competition and it creates a good culture we try and encourage females to be active in the game and they get two points per try, so it is to the males advantage to share the ball around,” he said.
“Having mixed teams gives a better atmosphere and has attracted more people to the competition,” he said.
“With all of the age groups there are lots of team that have families playing at the same time and there are not too many sports where you can do that,” he said.
“We have A grade down to G grade so there is a standard that will suit most capabilities,” David Casson said.
Registration for touch football is now open with a strong response from junior players already.
- Competition begins on October 18 and games will be held each Thursday.
- When a team is registered a code is generated and players belonging to that team register under that code.
- Individuals can register and be placed in a team.
- The Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 26 at 6pm at the Scone RSL Club in Guernsey Street.
- Each senior team needs to have a representative at the AGM and the call is out for new committee members to learn the ropes of running the competition.
