Thoroughbreds Round 5
By David Casson
SCONE Rugby League Football Club teams played in two different locations over the weekend but all came home with a win under the belt.
First Grade (56:0) and Reserve Grade (42:4) had convincing wins while Under 18’s had a touch 18:10 result and the Ladies League Tag a nail biting on the bell 14:10 victory.
Saturday afternoon football was at Murrurundi where the Reserve Grade and Ladies League Tag took on the locals which looked like both being close affairs.
First Grade and Under 18’s travelled to Greta for their matches on Sunday.
League Tag:
The League Tag team were a couple of players down thanks to rep training responsibilities, but the girls weren’t looking for any excuses.
Zoe Harper continued her try scoring efforts, going over within the first few minutes which was converted by Charmaine Bloomfield.
Murrurundi defence tightened up however, and they were next to go over, capitalizing on a Scone mistake near the try line.
Hayley Eveleigh kept the team in the game on numerous occasions taking last ditch tags.
Half time score was 6:4.
Ally Luck made the most of a nice pass from Lisa East to go over with 15 to go, however Murrurundi returned serve with their own converted try, tying the scores at 10:10.
That looked to be the likely score for the match until Ally Luck scooted down the side line for a match winning four pointer as the hooter was going. Final Score 14:10.
Reserve Grade:
Reserve Grade looked on the table to be a match of two even teams and the 10:0 half time score of 10:0, following tries to Josh Watson and Codie McCarthy and a Josh Noble conversion, reflected that there wasn’t much in the game.
The second half was a much different affair however, with Murrurundi no able to keep their solid defence going, Jake Bailey was over from dummy half in the first few minutes and the tries then kept coming consistently.
Josh Noble, Dale robinson, Kyle Wilcher, Troy Dunley, Tom Vincent scores, showing a range of skills and power.
Murrurundi never stopped trying however and managed a try with a few minutes to go. Josh Noble also converted 4 of the second half tries – final score 42:4.
Under 18’s:
The Under 18 match was a torrid affair and having four out injured only adds to the efforts of the team.
Injuries were aplenty on the paddock as well with a couple suffering concussion and another a leg injury.
Try scorers for the day were Brendon Norton, Bailey Miller and Ian Carter.
Lachlan Walmsley converted two and Haydon Bell converted the other.
A big effort from the whole team.
First Grade:
First Grade saw another dominant performance by the team resulting in a 56:0 scoreline.
The writing was well and truly on the wall when Scone had crossed for two converted tries within the first five minutes.
Tim Watson and then Josh Adams got the ball rolling with the early points, however Greta tightened up their defence to keep Scone out until the 30th minute when Jake Bailey scored out wide.
Greta would have been relatively happy with the 16:0 half time scoreline, however James Carrascalao was over within a few minutes of the restart.
Justin Apthorper was next to cross following some great team play and Hayden Topliss conversion brought the score to 26:0.
James Eveleigh was next to score, followed by Hayden Topliss with a double which he converted, and finally, Josh Adams recorded his second for the day, taking a well judged Gary McKeon kick to bring a final score of 50:0.
