Thele to be Laid to Rest
WELL known Aberdeen resident Thelma Barton will be laid to rest tomorrow after a service at Scone Uniting church at 1pm.
Thele with her husband Eric built and ran the Aberdeen newsagents for more than 41 years before handing the business over to their daughter Julie seven years ago.
Her daughter Janice Flaherty recalls that Thele didn’t spend too much time in the paper shop preferring to play local sport.
“She usually didn’t get into the shop until 4 or 5, because she was playing sport,” said Janice.
“She loved tennis, golf, bowls, she was very competitive and she had to be on all the committees and be the boss,” she laughed.
“In the winter she would always have her knitting and crocheting with her wherever she went and she loved spending time in the garden.
“The only trips away from Aberdeen were usually with bowls and sporting groups, because dad couldn’t understand why if you lived in Aberdeen you’d want to go on holiday.
“One year Ben (their grandson) sold them tickets to a 10 day trip to the Gold Coast, we didn’t know if they’d go, but we eventually got them on the bus,” she laughed.
After the church service people are welcome to join the family at the Aberdeen Sport and Recreation Club, formerly known as the Aberdeen Bowling Club.
