Take the Oath on Friday
THE Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre is encouraging people to have their photo taken and take the oath against violence towards women in the lead up to White Ribbon Day on Friday.
LEE Watts, manager of the Centre said that every year she writes a media release to remind everyone that we need to stop violence against women.
“From 2018 onwards, White Ribbon Day will move from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to the Friday before 25 November, this year, White Ribbon Day will be on Friday 23 November,” said Ms Watts.
“White Ribbon Day will continue to be a time for the community to come together and stand up, speak out and act to end men’s violence against women and children,” she said.
“According to the World Health Organisation, intimate partner violence is the most common type of violence against women, affecting 30 per cent of women worldwide, and Australia is not immune,” she said.
“Violence against women is a serious problem in Australia and at least one woman is killed every week by a current or former partner.
“The impact of violence against women is widespread and long-standing, generating profound personal, social and economic costs for individuals, communities and the nation.
“Domestic and family violence is also the major cause of homelessness for women and their children,” she said.
“Take a stand and support this cause not just on this day but every day,” Lee Watts said.
Call into the Scone Neighbourhood Centre at 130 Liverpool St before the 25th November and actively show your support by having your photo taken and challenging the attitudes and behaviours that lead to violence against women.
Swear the oath: White Ribbon Day.
