Scone Golf Report: July 22
By Julie Leckie
LAST Saturday provided perfect conditions for golf and a field of 48 golfers played a 2 ball Stableford multiplier sponsored by Scott Shann and Duncan Yuille.
Combining well is the secret to winning this competition and a great day for individual scoring produced some excellent partnerships. Tom and Kevin Thompson won the day with a score of 83 points from Alan Wood and Tony O’Neill on 76 points. One shot further back were visitors from Aberdeen, Robert Colbert and John Golledge.
In the individual Stableford competition John Roe played an unbelievable round on his way to 44 points from Tom Thompson with 40 points on a countback from Matt Hobbs, who continued his rich run of form. The balmy conditions helped the scoring and players needed to break par to even look like winning a golf ball. Scott Reid, Geoff Barton and Steven Clydsdale had particular cause to celebrate, all three carding eagles. The hot scoring continued on the par 3 greens, to beat the winners, John Roe and Michael Haynes, golfers had to be within a metre.
Next Saturday we are playing Irish Foursomes for the Phil McGuirk and Gordon Halliday Trophy and we have limited tee times available. Some afternoon players may need to register for the morning tee times to be sure of getting a game. Registration sheet and rules for Irish Foursomes are on the board at the club.
Next weekend the Scone Golf Course will be hosting the annual inter-district match between Hunter River District and Newcastle. Fourball events will take place on Saturday afternoon from 12Noon and individual matches will be on Sunday. Spectators are welcome and there should be some very high quality golf on display. As an example, Corey Lamb, one of the Hunter River juniors that will be playing is fresh from winning both the NSW and Queensland Junior Championships.
Last Thursday the daily competition was an 18 Hole Stableford playing for The Thoroughbred Trophy with beautiful weather attracting a good number of players out on the course. However the playing conditions did not seem to be reflected in the final scores so maybe the sunshine and the blue sky above lulled them into a more relaxed state of mind that didn’t include sinking long putts…? The Thoroughbred Trophy was won by a visiting player from Muswellbrook, Kim Robinson, with 34 points which was a good effort given it was her first time on the course – well done Kim! The Runner Up trophy was taken out by Kerry McLennan on a countback with 30 pts and ball winners were Julie Leckie 30pts, Annie Woods 29pts, Jodie Hinde 29pts and Narelle Rutter 28pts. Nearest The Pin went to Dordie Bragg. Congratulations to those who have finished their first round of the Peter & Marg Marshall Knockout with Annie Woods, Kerry McLennan, Dordie Bragg and Vonnie Palmer through to the second round with one match between Pam Manning & Noreen Marshall yet to be played. Lyn Banks, Narelle Rutter and Julie Leckie all received a bye in the first round.
Next Thursday the ladies play an 18 hole Stableford for The Gael Holland Trophy which is also the first round of the Best Two of Three Stableford Rounds Thoroughbred Trophy that takes place over the next few months.
Ross and Lyn Banks, our club captains, returned to Scone after a three month European holiday and played the course for the first time on Saturday. Both played par rounds and they are still telling people they have not been playing!
On Monday the lady golfers gathered for a coffee and to welcome their captain Lyn back with plenty of stories to tell.
