Scone Golf Report: July 1
By Julie Leckie
Scone Ladies stuck close to home this week playing their usual Tuesday 9 Hole Social and Beginners Day followed up with an 18 hole Stroke/Stableford on Thursday playing for the Noreen Marshall Trophy.
Our Tuesday social nine holes is proving popular for some of our regulars wanting to get in a bit of practice, along with recruiting new players and those wanting to return to golf after a break. This week we welcomed back Mary Brennan after some time off the course, and also Prue Martin from Murrurundi, both of whom are aiming to become a regular sight on the Scone Golf Course. All indications are that we have given Kristy Brooks the golfing bug who is enthusiastically embracing the Tues starters group. Once school holidays are over we are excited there are a few more that have also shown a strong indication to come along and learn to play this crazy game of golf which is great news!
On Thursday, the ladies played a Stroke/Stableford for the Noreen Marshall Trophy and the Hunter River District Medal Qualifier. Two of our players, Jo Brown and Annie Wood, are both on fire at the moment and had a great tussle for the winners podium with Jo the ultimate victor of the Noreen Marshall Trophy across the field with a fabulous 73 nett, narrowly winning on a count back from Annie Woods who was Runner Up. Tough luck Annie! The HRDGA Qualifier was played in Divisions with Sue Watts the Division One winning qualifier with 78 nett, and Jo Brown the Div Two qualifier with 73 nett, the district final being played later in the year. Ball winners on the day based on Stableford points were Annie Woods 35pts, Sue Watts 30pts and Narelle Rutter 29pts.
This coming Thursday is our 18 Hole Stroke/Stableford Monthly Medal and 3rd Golf NSW Medal.
Golfers on Saturday played an innovative 2-Ball 2-Digit Stableford competition promoted and sponsored by James and Justin Smart. The weather and the course were superb, some great scores were carded and there were some very nervous short putts and tight lipped partners when a miss costs 10 points. Unusually we saw two eagles scored on the day. Mick Alsleben made eagle on the second hole and George Campbell on the third. However, the day belonged to Michael Haynes, with a great individual score of 40 Stableford points, enough to lift him into first place for the Winter Cup by one point from Clayton Rogers. With his father Malcolm as partner, he also won the 2-ball trophy from Brenan Reeves and Brad Hockley. We welcomed Dave Spies back to the club from Bowral for the weekend and he obliged by winning nearest the pin on the 4th hole and scoring 39 points. We think he likes the new course! New member Jodie Ihle won nearest the pin on 8th hole.
Next week we will be playing the first stroke event from the blue tees for the Herb Tilse trophy. It’s a serious piece of silverware with a lot of history and members should be keen to play in the first stroke event from the full length of our new golf course. This event qualifies the winner for Mug-of-Mugs competition at the end of the year.
It was so pleasing to observe the fabulous Sunday weather enticed many players out to enjoy the new course in all its glory, with large numbers of groups of family and friends making their way from tee to green, with even the occasional visit to the odd bunker! Just as pleasing was to see some very keen enthusiasts utilising the practice green, practice bunker and the nets. A great reward to those involved in the original planning and design of one of Scone’s greatest assets. Keep it up everyone!
