Scone Golf Report: Aug 1, 3
By Lyn Banks
On Saturday, August 3 at Scone Golf Course an 18 Hole Stroke event for the Monthly Mug was played. The day was near perfect for the fifty competition golfers with the later players having some wind to contend with. The course was in its usual excellent condition, and if players stayed on the fairways and judged the pace of the greens, they were likely to do well. The scores were very hot given that play was from the back tees too. New member Charlie Wintle certainly made a great start in his first game on the course recording 67 nett to win the mug. Welcome Charlie. The A Grade winner was Luke Stevens from Denman with 71, B Grade went to Duncan Yuille with 70, whilst C Grade was won by Tony Pringle on 68 nett.
Balls after the above winners went to Andrew Mion (Nundle) 70, Clayton Rogers 71, Justin Smart 71, Steve Morse 71, Michael Alsleben 73, Matthew James 73, Greg Parkinson (Manilla) 74, Garry Carter 74, Simon Wilkinson (Nelson Bay) 75, Tony O’Neill 75 nett. The nearest the pins were won by Clayton Rogers on the 4th / 13th at 1.79 metres, and by Justin Smart on the 8th / 17th at 0.82 metres.
The best score from the ladies was Kerry McLennan who had 72 nett.
On Thursday, August 1, the ladies also played an 18 Hole Stroke event for the Melanie’s Jewellers Trophy, the 4th Monthly Medal and also a GNSW round. Conditions were again conducive to good scoring with no wind and perfect greens as is the norm. In a good day out Lyn Banks had 69 nett to win the medal, also taking out the NTP on the 8th, recording a birdie on the 13th to collect 9 balls from the birdie box and taking home the Julie Leckie “Wine O’Clock” prize for the least putts with 27. Kerry McLennan received the Centanni runner up voucher with 72 nett. Balls on stableford points after the above players, went to Judy Carmody 35, Annie Woods 34 and Julie Leckie 33.
On Friday, August 2, seven ladies supported Tamworth Golf Club’s event. Dordie Bragg came home with the Division 1 nett prize having a fine round of 70 nett. Likewise Judy Carmody had a very good 71 nett to win the runner up prize for Division 3. On Wednesday August 7, four ladies will head to Singleton for their Open Day. On Thursday August 8 the Scone ladies will host an invitation day for the Dordie Bragg Trophies playing an Irish Team event. An 8.30am shotgun start will accommodate the field of 36 and many visitors will experience the course for the first time. In the coming weeks the ladies will also contest the inaugural Putting Knockout Championship to be played on the fabulous practice putting greens.
The Hunter River District men’s Senior Championship was played at Kurri on Sunday August 4. Charlie Manning, Lindsay Hodge, Ross Banks and Red Palmer represented the club but were unable to bring home any prizes.
In coming events at Scone Golf Club the ladies are gearing up for the Club Championships on August 15, 18 and 22 with keen interest being displayed in the first singles championship on the new course. On Saturday August 10 the event will be an 18 Hole Stableford for the Garry Taylor and Geoff Barton Trophy. The men’s Open Day previously scheduled for August 11 has been deferred to a date to be advised.
