Scone Comes to the Rescue
THE blood bank has been struggling for donations, so they were relieved to reach Scone where people are lined up ready to donate.
Donna Treseder, registered nurse in charge of the mobile blood bank said the may even add another day to their time in Scone, when they return in three months time.
“In the last few weeks we have struggled to get donations because people have come down with colds and flus, but that does not seem to have reached Scone,” said Ms Treseder.
“Scone’s really come to the rescue,” she said.
“All of the blood donation spots are booked, but we still need plasma donated and plasma is really important it has eighteen life saving products including for people with cancers, bleeding disorders and a range of critical things,” she said.
“The blood donors we most want are people who are O negative because their blood can be used directly in an emergency with any blood type, but they only make up six percent of the population and since only three percent of the population donates it is difficult to get,” she said.
Donna said the biggest hurdle to people donating blood for the first time is the needle.
“But every time someone donates for the first time they are surprised and usually say ‘is that all there is to it?’,” she said.
Brad Snow from Aberdeen made the time to make a donation and estimates it is the 28th time he has donated.
“Everyone needs blood; I’ve had surgery before and this is my way of being able to give back,” said Mr Snow.
“If you haven’t donated before, just eat and drink before coming in and don’t be worried about it, it’s not bad,” he said.
