Save Scone Target Store Campaign
THE Kelly Street Target Country store will be closing its doors next year after Wesfarmers announced the closure of 167 Australian Target stores within the next 12 months, to “improve the commercial viability of the business”.
Scone Chamber are now calling on locals to join their campaign, “Take the target off our TARGET”, which aims to save the local Target store by embracing it as part of the Scone Revitalisation Project.
Chamber President Steve Guihot said the store “would benefit greatly by being part of the new look Kelly Street Redevelopment” and that the Chamber will be working with Council and Government officials to “unify the approach to be taken”.
“We understand that business conditions have been difficult for retail however, the opportunity to be part of the the redeveloped CBD may not have been fully considered by Target Management,” said Mr Guihot.
“We intend to work with Council along with Michael and Barnaby to convey the great opportunities those plans provide,” he said.
Target also revealed that 92 of the 167 stores will be converted to Kmart however, the local Scone Target Country did not make the cut.
Managing Director of Target Australia Marina Joanou said the majority of the changes will begin early next year.
“Some of these stores will be converting to Kmart and, sadly, some will be closing,” said Ms Joanou.
“We understand these closures will affect a lot of people in the Target community and we appreciate your patience and understanding during these challenging times,” she said.
