Respect Grows for ANZAC’s
THE number of people paying their respects to the ANZAC’s at the Scone dawn service continues to grow with more than 1,200 people in attendance this morning, spilling onto the roads surrounding the war memorial.
George Clementson from the Scone Returned Services League sub-branch addressed the crowd and spoke of the origins of the dawn service beginning in the trenches when soldiers spent some quiet moments of reflection before preparing for attacks in the half light of day.
The dawn service was once the domain of soldiers who quietly gathered to commemorate, but today the community numbers continue to grow.
“There has been a terrific turn out in Scone in recent years and the numbers are growing each year,” said Mr Clementson.
Val Quinell, president of the sub-branch said, “the town has really come out and we thank you for it.”
“We have pride in the ANZAC’s courage and comradeship and we share the sorrow of those who morn them,” he said.
Community representatives laid wreaths at the memorial including the SES, Rural Fire Service, police, Fire and Rescue, the Council and local schools.
