Preparing for Floods

BRIGADIER Darren Naumann, who was the regional recovery coordinator for the Hunter during the April 2015 super storms has applauded the release of a Farm Flood Readiness Kit.

It contains a series of resources including a flood readiness checklist and flood plan template, as well as details on how to access emergency information, such as BOM and SES warnings.

The kit will enable landholders to identify the risks and hazards on their property and identify the actions that need to be taken when a flood is coming.

“This user-friendly resource is the first of its kind for NSW,” he said.

“The Farm Flood Readiness Kit is designed to assist farmers to make their property as flood ready as they can and to develop a flood plan to help minimise the damage that so many landholders experienced in the devastating April 2015 super storm,” he said.

“The support that Hunter Local Land Services has provided to landholders in building disaster resilience is commendable,” he said.

“This agency is clearly focused on improving the resilience and efficiency of the primary industry sector,” Brigadier Naumann said.

The Hunter super storm event caused more than $105 million of damage to primary industries in the Lower Hunter, with substantial losses of crops, pasture, fodder stores, farming infrastructure and animals including over 1000 livestock and horses.

Copies of the free kit are available by contacting Hunter Local Land Services’ Paterson office on 02 4930 1030.

Further information is available on the Hunter Local Land Services website at www.hunter.lls.nsw.gov.au.
