Magic 69 Devils Born at Aussie Ark
TODAY Aussie Ark is celebrating their most successful breeding season ever, with 69 Tasmanian devils born at their Barrington Tops facility.
Tim Faulkner, president of the Aussie Ark said the new births represent a 44 percent increase on last year signalling hope for the species.
“The Aussie Ark team has been working hard all year to ensure the health and well-being of our devils, and we are over the moon with excitement at 69 joeys – our best ever breeding season,” said Mr Faulkner .
“These joeys have the weight of their species on them as insurance populations like ours mean, if Tasmanian devils in the wild do go extinct, we won’t lose these animals forever,” Tim Faulkner said.
In the wild the Tasmanian Devil population has decreased by 90 percent since 1996 and faces extinction from the contagious Devil facial tumour disease.
The Aussie Ark has the most successful breeding program on the mainland, sureing up the survival of the species.
