LED lights up Murrurundi
ALL of Murrurundi’s street lights will be replaced with energy saving LED (light-emitting diode) lights by the end of next week.
The light replacement is part of an Upper Hunter Shire Council carbon cutting initiative, which plans to reduce green house emissions and save Council thousands in electricity costs.
Upper Hunter Shire Mayor Maurice Collison said street lighting is an expensive overhead and the new lights will reduce energy consumption by up to 70 percent.
“Public lighting plays an important part in keeping out pedestrians and motorists safe in our shire but reducing the impact on our environment is equally as important,” Cr Collison said.
“The LED street lights are less of an impact on our environment and are easier for power company staff to maintain,” he said.
Workers from Essential Energy will start replacing the lights on Monday, with minimal disturbance to residents.
Council will be working closely with Ausgrid to roll out street light replacements in other townships later in the year.
