If These Hands Could Talk

“THE day that photo was taken he was putting grease in the slasher and he stopped for a smoke, I always carted the camera around with me and I caught the moment,” said Karen Davis.

“Looking at the creases in his hands and you might notice he has one missing finger, I can’t remember how it happened, but he is the old farmer type he has worked hard with his hands his whole life and I’m sure there are some people who still work hard but it is fading out I mean lots of men go for manicures now, so I think that kind of generation of men who have hands like that is fading,” she said.

“He is a very dear old friend of mine, a hard worker and a father figure, Richard Ray and I took the photo four years ago, but it is still my favourite,” she said.

Karen Davis won the top award at the Murrurundi Photographic Prize for the photograph on Friday night and said the quality of the entries this year was inspiring.

“I was absolutely shocked to win, my legs turned to jelly and I kept thinking to myself I had to hold it together,” she laughed.

“To win two years in a row was great and there is some unbelievable images there this year; I don’t know where these people have been hiding all of these years,” he said.

“People should absolutely go and have a look and if you are interested in photography, you don’t need to be a professional photographer to capture something like Richard’s hand in a moment and they are the ones people like,” Karen Davis said.

Mandy Archibald, organiser of the Competition said with more than 360 entries it was their biggest year yet.

“The standard across all sections is just terrific,” she said.

“It is just great to see so many people have a go, terrific for Murrurundi and to see photography increasing in popularity,” Mandy Archibald said.

The organisers wanted to thank their sponsors: Carlyle Vet Services, Glenbrae Timor, Boyd’s Creek Murrurundi, Barbara Morgan, Robin Babbage and Murrurundi and District Arts Council.
