Hottest September Day on Record

Filed in Recent News by September 25, 2017

SATURDAY was the hottest day on record for September in Scone and Murrurundi and a total fire ban persists for the Upper Hunter.

Scone reached a top of 35.2 degrees on Saturday topping the previous record of 33.6 degrees on September 24 in 2006.

Also on Saturday, Murrurundi had its hottest September day with a temperature of 29.6 degrees, the previous record was 28.2 degrees on September 26, 2013.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said the hot temperatures are yielding to a cold front from the south and while the rest of the state may get some showers later in the week, the chance of rain in the Upper Hunter is slim.

“These hot temperatures were caused by some north westerly winds bringing really hot air from the centre of the Australian continent and dragging it down over us, so this cold front which is pushing through right now is bringing more southerly air, which is cooler and caused Sunday’s temperature to be not quite as brutal,” said Anita Titmarsh from the BOM.

“For the next week, because we’ve had this cold front going through at the moment, it won’t be quite as bad,” she said.

“Temperatures for Scone are forecast to be in the high 20’s but it may creep up into the low 30’s and Wednesday is currently forecast to be 32 degrees,” she said.

“We do don’t have any rain forecast for early in the week, further than that there is a slim chance of a shower later in the week, but that forecast is quite uncertain at this stage,” she said.

“There is a total fire ban in place, it has been really hot, dry and windy which is just terrible for fire dangers,” she said.

“The relative humid has only been 15 to 20 percent and we’ve had some fairly gusty winds of up to 50 kilometres an hour,” Ms Titmarsh said.
