Get Permits Before Things Heat Up
“With the amount of rain that we have had there is going to be a lot of feed around and at Christmas time is when things could start to look different and if the weather turns and things dry out the risk of fire will be high,” said Andrew Sowter, fire permit officer and senior deputy captain of Parkville Rural Fire Service.
The fire season is typically between October and March, but in the Liverpool Range zone which includes the Scone area, the fire season starts in September.
Fire permits are free and there are different types of fire permits available.
“There are some materials you can’t burn such as tyres, plastics and things that can be carcinogenic, or if there is a fire ban all permits cancelled, if it is too windy a burn may have to be delayed, we look at permits on a case by case basis, there is no blanket approach,” said Andrew Sowter.
“But we definitely encourage people to apply for permits now before the fire season really heats up,” he said.
To obtain a permit phone the Willow Tree control centre and they will put you in touch with the nearest fire permit officer: 02 6747 1493.
