Gale Force Winds on the Way
THE Bureau of Meteorology is predicting gale force winds tomorrow and the National Parks have issued a warning for people driving on the Barrington.
The winds will start at approximately 20 knots and increase to gale force, which is more than 34 knots or 63 kilometres an hour by lunchtime.
There will be rain overnight, which will continue throughout tomorrow, bringing the chance of snow down to 1300 metres.
The winds will drop off on Thursday, with isolated showers persisting and clearing by the weekend.
On the back of the gale force winds, the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service Upper Hunter manager, Catherine Watt has issued a warning to use extreme care when driving on the Barrington.
“The predicted weather conditions will make roads extremely slippery,” said Ms Watt.
“If strong winds eventuate, there is also potential for trees and branches to fall, posing a direct risk to visitors, and possibly blocking access into and out of the area,” she said.
“Conditions will be monitored and road closures may be put in place to ensure the safety of all users if required due to slippery, icy conditions.
“It is vital that visitors planning a trip to the Barrington Tops are prepared for changing weather conditions.
“Let someone know your plans before travelling, understand that mobile phone coverage is very limited and patchy in this remote area, and be aware that conditions on the sub-alpine plateau can change rapidly,” she said.
All people entering remote areas, whether by vehicle or on foot, should inform a family member or other responsible person of their travel plans and expected date and time of return.
The National Parks recommend as a bare minimum, visitors to the Barrington Tops should carry:
- plenty of additional warm clothing, particularly for children
- food and water sufficient for all members of the party for the duration of the stay, with some reserve for unforeseen circumstances
- 3G or equivalent telephone capable of transmitting from remote areas and to be aware that phone reception is extremely unreliable in most areas of the Barrington wilderness.
