Feeding in the Drought
WITH farmers in the Upper Hunter facing a harsh winter and hard decisions the Local Land Services are hosting drop in sessions next week to help.
Kirstin Bisley, regional livestock officer and Bill Hoffman state livestock manager from the LLS have been visiting farmers during the last 12 months to help farmers make drought management decisions and will be available at the sessions.
“Feed quality can really vary and it is important producers seek advice when making plans and budgeting for feeding livestock this winter,” said Ms Bisley.
“As drought conditions are beginning to affect more of the state we understand feed, especially hay and silage is becoming harder to source, but it’s crucial producers don’t buy ‘cheap’ or unusual feeds as it may have serious health implications for their livestock.
“We can help work out the best options and available feed supplies for each landholder, depending on what outcome they are looking for with their livestock.”
Hunter Local Land Services advises using the DPI’s Drought Feeding calculator to work out feed costs – working out the costs on units of protein and energy is more important than cost per tonne of hay/grain/cottonseed.Read more about the Drought Feed Calculator.
