THE second Cauliflower Cup was held in Scone today attracting 280 children from as far as Sydney.

Scone won in the 9/10’s and the 7/8’s while Chatswood won the 13/14’s and Merewether won the 11/12’s.

Renee Park, one of the organisers, said the new carnival was born from local people simply wanting more junior rugby games.

“Our normal rugby season we play in the Central North and we don’t play every week it is only every couple of weeks we travel to each town and have a carnival, so we wanted a bit more football,” said Ms Park.

“We decided to have a championship day and invite any club in Australia and play for a trophy and make it a charity day,” she said.

“They are teams that don’t necessarily play against each other, because it is not a rep level and because it’s club rugby a lot of these players won’t usually go into rep teams and won’t travel, but with this everyone can play,” she said.

“There is a charity called the Cauliflower Club to increase participation levels and improve the lives of injured or disabled people, it’s rugby orientated, but it’s not just about rugby.

This year there were 17 teams from Barraba, Scone, Maitland, Avoca, Lake Macquarie, Ourimbah, Chatswood, Mereweather, Warnervale and the Newcastle wanderers.
