JUST as the main event began, so too did the rain, but the new ground held up and the show went on at the Cassilis Rodeo on the weekend.

Tim Stanley, president of the Cassilis Rodeo said the crowd numbers were slightly down on last year due to the weather, but the competitor numbers remained strong.

The Cassilis rodeo ground had plenty of sand which held up under the wet conditions.

The Cassilis rodeo ground had plenty of sand which held up under the wet conditions.

“A few storms came through which put a few off coming, but there were still more than 1,100 people we reckon,” said Mr Stanley.

“There was about 20 mils but we made them keep riding,” he laughed.

“We’d dumped a heap of sand on the ground this year and so it didn’t worry us at all, if had not put the sand down though we would have had to call it off,” said

“Gibb was there riding and he is the newly crowned Australian champion steer wrestler and on Friday a kid called Cameron Southern won three buckles, junior bull rider, novice bull and novice saddle bronc,” he said.

“We had a few fellas come across from Western Australia, there were some from Queensland and a few Victorians,” Tim Stanley said.

The motto of the Cassilis Rodeo is ‘some bigger, none better’ and the rodeo is attracting more competitors each year.

“We just keep getting better and better and I think the word is getting out that we put on a good show and the party afterwards is pretty good too,” he said.

“We’ve got new shoots and a new surface and everyone commented on the surface which was good,” he said.

“There is good prize money with the open events going for more than $1,200 and the saddle bronc is $1,500 and anything over a grand is pretty good prize money,” Tim Stanley said.
