Cairn Construction Underway
ABERDEEN is set to have a cairn, as a contribution from the Aberdeen Highland Games to the community and in recognition of the significant role the Scottish played in the Upper Hunter.
Construction began in Taylor Park last week and local stone mason John Henley is putting the stones together.
Charles Cooke, president of the Aberdeen Highland Games said he is excited about the lasting legacy for the area.
“People on the highlands built cairns, one it got stones off the road and also if they were going somewhere they would bring a stone back and place it on the cairn so it becomes a memorial,” explained Charles.
“There is a stone mason who lives up at Moonan, John Henley and he’s done a lot of the stonework around here,” he said.
“We got the stones from out Gundy way and had them taken down to Aberdeen,” he said.
“We’ll have a plaque on it eventually commemorating the efforts of the Scottish fraternity in developing the Hunter Valley,” he said.
“That will be there forever and it’s our 20 year contribution to the community,” Charles Cooke said.
The cairn is on track to be completed for the 20th anniversary of the Aberdeen Highland Games on Saturday, July 6, 2019.
