By-election spending spree
INDEPENDENT candidate Kirsty O’Connell says dividends are being paid to the Upper Hunter as a result of rising political competition prior to the May 22 by-election.
Ms O’Connell called the by-election a “bellwether election,” but said it is good to see the government focus on the region, which has delivered billions in royalties.
“Already we have seen announcements of by-passes, a new police station, a $25 million future fund, investment in Greyhound Racing, a new fire station and I’m sure there will be more,” Ms O’Connell said.
“The major parties are under the pump, the Nationals to retain the seat to stop them going into minority government and the Labor Party wanting to win the seat for the first time in nearly 90 years,” she said.
“The Federal Government Budget will also see more Federal money come into the Upper Hunter to complement the State Government funding. Everyone knows this is a bellwether election,” she said.
“Clearly it’s paying dividends for our community to have credible independents putting pressure on the major parties,” said Ms O’Connell.
Ms O’Connell said if she or another independent wins, Upper Hunter residents will gain further bargaining power and see even more project funding.
“The Coalition Government won’t fall as a result of the by-election and if this little spending spree is any indication, imagine what they will spend to get the seat back at the next general election in March 2023,” Ms O’Connell said.
“Voters of the Upper Hunter have a rare opportunity here. Put an independent into Parliament and get the bargaining power our community deserves,” she said.
“It’s not just about getting a fairer share of the funding that my election will bring but also getting a change of policy to help plan and shape a prosperous, healthy future for our electorate,” said Ms O’Connell.
