Australia Day in Murrurundi
By Des Dugan
AND then the rains came down.
Murrurundi Australia Day event was completely washed out forcing award presentations to the White Hart Hotel.
It was a soaking affair for parade participants as they waited patiently in the pouring rain for presentation.
Vehicles had to parade around the outskirts of the Wilson Memorial Oval while other participants including the horse contingent used the oval facing the grandstand.
Stall-holders along with officials were forced to duck for covers as the torrential rain made it an unpleasant day for all.
The weather stalled the presentation putting the event well over an hour out of kilter.
Some people unfortunately went home with only the recipients and friends, about 50 people, adjourning to the hotel to hear guest Greg Donovan, founder of Born to Run, talk about his experiences with Type 1 diabetes and the long haul to raise funds to help make people aware of the condition.
Citizen of the Year for Murrurundi was Diane McLoughlin for services over the years to various citizen bodies in the region.
Young Citizen of the Year was Lacey Cornall.
Achiever of the Year was awarded to Mandy Archibald while Young achiever was Sophie Edmonds, Young Sports Achiever of the Year went to Phil Ledgerwood and Community Group of the Year was Murrurundi SES.
