Allan Bridge Damaged
The Allan Bridge, located between Glenbawn and Segenhoe, is the most significant heritage bridge in the Upper Hunter Shire and is closed following damage which is believed to have occurred on Saturday night.
Police attended the bridge at approximately 5:50am on Sunday and said the foundations of the bridge have buckled.
Council confirmed a specialist bridge assessor inspected the bridge today and needed to make more investigations to assess the severity of the damage.
Council were unwilling to state how they believe the damage may have occurred, but said repairs were carried out as recently as June this year.
The bridge is rated for a maximum of four tonnes and is only one of two trussed cable suspension bridges in New South Wales capable of carrying road traffic.
The Allan Bridge is one of five timber heritage bridges in the Shire.
It was constructed in 1937, was washed away in 1955 and reconstructed at a site further downstream.
Those travelling in the area are advised to use Broad Crossing or the Pages River Crossing, both on Glenbawn Road, while Allan Bridge is closed.
Update: Allan Bridge Reopened.
