Aberdeen Marks Centenary of Armistice
By Nancy Lee
MORE than 60 people from Aberdeen and surrounds came together this morning to mark Remembrance Day at Aberdeen RSL.
From the small town, 109 men served in World War I and 142 have served in other conflicts since.
Against a backdrop of a ‘Field of Remembrance’ made of 300 crosses and poppies with names of the fallen on the bowling green, Adam Morrison, defence veteran and treasurer of the Sub-Branch, led the moving service.
Veteran David Sullivan read ‘The Ode’ with Mikayla Croft; Mikayla also read the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’.
Prayers were read by Bob Dixon, Trish Johnson, Max Morrison and Larry Keagan.
Kiralee Hardcastle played trumpet, Doug McLeod and Rod Furminger raised and lowered the flags and Padre Glen Hughes gave the closing blessing.
Wreaths remembering the fallen were then laid by various representatives of the community.
