Schoolboys Action
By Jamie Munn
THIS Sunday all roads lead to Scone Park for the annual Group 21 Rugby League Schools Carnival ran by the Scone Old Boys Club.
With action kicking off at 8am you will need to be early so you don’t miss any of the action because the license to thrill will be on show all day.
Once again carnival coordinator Marika Eveleigh has rustled up 50 plus teams and over 750 plus players in what is an outstanding achievement, considering all players will receive a free sausage sandwich and soft drink just for showing up.
Throw in the class of Scone Old Boys and you have a recipe that is hard to beat.
Marika was quick to pass thanks to all the helpers that show up to do all the hard jobs behind the scenes, Scone Shires Terry Coombes who works tirelessly with Glen Pennell and Grant Mackay to ensure the fields and surrounds are first class.
“The helpers in the BBQ tent , canteen , ground staff , the list goes on – it’s a great team effort,” she said.
Bob Barker added, “don’t forget the class of the referees that will be on show, we have future NRL referees Davon Patten, Nick Martin, Joey Butler, Liam Parker – then throw in Matt Edwards and the man that has held it all together for many years Rod Bowd , plus I’m sure I’ve missed a few – but it shows the top level that these players will be exposed to.”
“The Scone Old Boys are pleased to be again involved in such a great day of rugby league and urge all current and former Old Boys to don your blue shirt and to get down to flip a steak or two,”said Bob.
As mentioned there will be something for everyone with the BBQ operating and the famous Thoroughbred Hot Chips, frozen slushies in the canteen, the Kick Arse Coffee cart for a heart starter , Scone Sports Store will have a selection of their wares on show, as will Zibara clothing who will again sponsor the player of the final in each grade – it looks a fantastic mix for a day not to be missed.
With free entry you would be crazy to stay at home !!!
