BHP Wants Local Suppliers

LOCAL businesses are encouraged to attend an information session in Scone this evening to learn how they can register to supply products and services to BHP Billiton.

The ‘Local Buying’ program was successfully trialed by the company in Queensland and is now being rolled out in New South Wales, said NSW energy coal asset president James Palmer.

“For many years, local businesses have participated in existing supply and procurement processes, but we want t make it simpler and easier for them to competitively bid for opportunities to supply goods and services to our Mount Arthur coal operation,” said Mr Palmer.

“Given the success of the local buying program in Queensland, it seemed obvious that we should expand it the Hunter Valley where small businesses are finding innovative ways to evolve in what is a difficult global market,” he said.

“Mt Arthur coal is a significant contributor to the local economy, having invested more than $85 million in the hunter Valley last year,” he said.

“From my time in Queensland I saw first-hand how valuable this program can be and I’m looking forward to the implementation here over the coming weeks,” James Palmer said.
