YESTERDAY at the Scone waste depot a concrete slab was poured and construction will begin next week on three new recycling sheds to open by mid-year.

A weighbridge will also be installed at the depot to base fees on the weight of landfill deposited.

There will also be a tip shop to sell recycled goods such as gas bottles, oils, fluorescent bulbs and other items not for general waste.

The Upper Hunter Shire Council obtained a grant of $240,675 and Council will dollar match the grant to improve recycling facilities.

Wayne Bedggood, mayor of the Upper Hunter Shire Council said the new facilities would allow more recycling options for residents and reduce landfill.

“Upper Hunter residents have told us that improved recycling services are a key issue,” Mayor Bedggood said.

“This is a great opportunity for Council and residents to not only improve recycling efforts, but upcycling by rescuing pre-loved goods and giving them another life,” he said.

“Council is constantly striving to reduce the amount of mixed waste at our depots and increase our recycling.

“This is not just good for the environment it helps reduce the waste levy payable to the government,” said Wayne Bedggood.
