Scone Saleyards: Feb 2
Report provided by Stuart Sheldrake.
There were 1,300 cattle yarded today, which was a rise in usual numbers due to the Australia Day public holiday last week.
A very good quality yarding of yearling and milk calves penned which saw a market very strong for all descriptions of trade cattle.
All good lines of yearlings and weaners made from $3.15 through to $3.50 a kilo.
Most weaners were making between $850 to more than $1,000 depending on weight.
A good number of cows were yarded, which saw the export market ease compared to a fortnight ago.
Heavy steers and bullocks were also slightly cheaper, similar to the cows.
At the local saleyards if we continue to have a good season, we’ll continue to see the levels we are seeing at the moment, I think we’ll start to see breeding stock selling for good rates.
In terms of the export markets we may have seen the peak of it, but for restocking prices we might continue to see that at a fairly similar level.
In terms of cattle projections, there was a lot less numbers because of the drought in Queensland, but they are starting to get rain and they’ll be looking to retain and purchase stock, which will continue to see high priced breeding stock.
