IN SCONE there were many people in our community worth celebrating today.
The awards were hosted by Mike Pritchard, with Australia Day Ambassador Peter Herbert providing some entertaining insights into the world of Australian television.
The key attributes Peter said make a good television producer were also qualities displayed in our award recipients: good people skills, being able to work well with others and initiative.
Mayor Wayne Bedggood presented Dr John Paradice OAM with the special excellence award for his outstanding contribution to medicine, making note of his other award of the medal of the Order

The Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre took out the Community Group of the Year.
Manager Lee Watts said pats on the back are few and fair between in community services, so the award was highly valued by her team.
“We do it because we love the community, we’ve been helping the community for 20 years and we’ll keep doing it,” said Lee Watts.
Chloe Hollingsworth received the award for Young Sportstar of the Year.

Kirsten Smith was awarded Sportstar of the Year and thanked Council, Scone High School and her family for the opportunity and support they have given to her.
Young Citizen of the Year is Sophie Dawson, who was unable to attend the ceremony.
The Hunter McLoughlin Memorial Citizen of the Year award went to Margaret Cooper who is still actively involved in Scone Basketball 50 years after being one of the founders.
Mike Pritchard joked that Margie can still shoot a good basket, but tends not to do many slam dunks anymore.
Her award was presented by Hunter McLoughlin’s granddaughter Summer.
Mr Jeremy Fletcher director of the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music with recipient of the Barry Rose Memorial Music Scholarship, violinist, Emily Turner.
The Barry Rose Memorial Music Scholarship was awarded to young violinist Emily Turner and presented by director of the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music Jeremy Fletcher.
The School Award recipients were:
- Sandra Salama, Scone Grammar School,
- Hayden Clark, Scone High School and
- Nikki Hollingsworth, St Joseph’s High School
The School Award for creative arts recipients were:
- Sophie Jenkins, Scone Grammar School,
- Braydon Walmsley, Scone High School and
- Ryan Gray, St Joseph’s High School

Nikki Hollingsworth graciously thanked her school, the person who nominated her and congratulated the other students on receiving their awards.
While Ryan Gray said he wasn’t expecting an award and wished everyone a happy Australia Day.
And there are now five more people in our community who are proud to be Australians with Eduard Houy from South Africa, Stephen Suneesh from India, James Camacho from the Phillippines, Xu Li from China and Natalia Trofymenko from the Ukraine all becoming citizens.
The Scone Singers had the audience clapping along and singing
“Home Among the Gum Trees” and the celebrations finished the way all good formal Australian gatherings should with the ladies of the Country Women’s Association providing morning tea and sandwiches.
