Sculpture a Standout at the Scone Art Prize

MORE than 18 volunteers have spent the weekend preparing for the opening of the 55th Scone Art Prize on Friday.

There are more than 222 pieces of art which have been entered this year and organiser Roger Skinner said the sculpture this year is a highlight.

“There is lots and lots of really good sculpture, there is a suburb piece from Paul Adams and I’m absolutely stoked,” said Mr Skinner.

“Natasha Soonchild from Nundle did a terrific sculpture Dorothee Heibel a terrific classy figurative work her daughter Michele Heibel lovely miniatures,” he said.

“The sculpture is really impressive and the ceramics are still coming in,” he said.

“This year the miniatures are the second biggest section and the biggest section remains the Bobby Paradice Prize with prize money of $5,000,” he said.

“The paintings are also less jingoistic this year and they have become more introspective and casting a stronger eye over the Australian landscape,” he said. 

“We are also getting more mixed media, we’ve got collagraphs for the first time and some more monotypes, it is really opening up the field and that is encouraging,” Roger Skinner said.

More than 222 works of art will be on display during the Scone Art Prize this year.

This years’ judge is Maree Skene from the Maitland Regional Gallery.

The opening night is on Friday and will the works will be on exhibition between 10am and 4pm until Sunday, September 15, when it will finish slightly earlier at 1pm. Entry fee is $2.

• Where: Scone Arts and Crafts Hall, 63 Kingdon Street, Scone.
• Cost: $15 at the door, with a drink and canapes on arrival. Catalogues will be available this year for $2.
