Remembering the People Behind the Kings
By Trish Taylor
On Saturday 22nd September 2018 King of the Ranges members gathered at Rosedale Complex Murrurundi to remember six Committee members who have sadly passed away in recent years and who had given many hours to ensure continuation of the King of the Ranges event.
The date was significant as King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge was incorporated on the 22nd of September 2003.
Family and friends of Merv Nicholson, Pat O’Hearn, Viv Carter, John Purcell, Barbara Smith and Coral Moss came together for the unveiling of a special Commemorative Stone.
Earl Kelaher thanked Committee members Warren Bramley for finding a suitable stone and Bob Paton’s team for creating the memorial in an appropriate place at Rosedale.
Earl spoke a little about each past member before asking long time local resident John Benham to address those present and unveil the stone.
The day also included the naming of a Grandstand, built by members and volunteers. Barry Moss, nephew of Archie “Bung” McInnes, has been associated with KOTR since inception.
He thanked Warren Bramley for donating a great piece of timber and Andrew Hope of Country Mile Signs for his design and production. Barry then unveiled The “Bung” McInnes Memorial Stand in honour of the event’s inspirational figurehead.
With the formalities concluded all those present went on to relax and enjoy a great BBQ lunch cooked by the hardworking Committee and a choice of delicious salads donated by members.
A big thank you must go to all who took time to attend this function and share memories of those who gave so much to the King of the Ranges.
The King of the Ranges will be held February 21 – 24, 2019, visit the website for more details: King of the Ranges.
