Tennis Win for Gundy
THE original ant bed tennis courts in Gundy were recently restored through community fundraising and now a $18,310 government grant will allow the Gundy Social Tennis Club to put down a synthetic surface.
Rachel Roberts, president of the Club said it will be great for the people of Gundy, especially the children.
“I was fairly shocked that we were successful being a small community,” said Ms Roberts.
“The grant was through the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund, with fundraising we’ve already done and $7,000 from Bengalla we now that the $30,000 to resurface the courts,” she said.
“We’ve been playing on the original ant bed courts…tennis courts back in the day the gravel used was from ant nests and ours are one of the last ones out this way,” she said.
“One court will be for tennis and the other court will be for tennis, netball and basketball and our goal is to put the rings in that turn around at each end, so one side will be basketball and the other side will be netball, that’s our goal,” she said.
“We are really excited for the kids of Gundy quite a few younger kids, primary school age and a few teenage kids and there is nothing really in Gundy for those kids,” she said.
“I’m excited there will be somewhere for them to go with their friends and also we quite enjoy having a play with tennis and basketball, so it’s really exciting,” Rachel Roberts said.
The Club aims to have the new synthetic courts within the next 12 months.
The original ant bed courts are currently open and can be booked through Rachel Roberts: 0409 075 188.
