Winning Works at the Scone Art Prize

EUGENIA Dunlevie won the $5,000 Bobby Paradice Prize last night at the opening of the Scone Art Prize for her work “Escaping the Congestion”.

Peter Carlin who judged the works on exhibition this year said the standard and diversity in each category made it difficult to decide on winners.

“Pastels can be done in so many different ways, water colours can be done in so many different ways so you’ve got different techniques in different styles to judge, so it took me about three hours,” said Mr Carlin.

“The miniatures is always difficult because they have some fantastic miniature artists around here and you are limited to a size of 40 centimetres and the miniatures were difficult so I ended up giving two highly commended,” he said.

‘Water colour was interesting again because there were so many different methods, the wash, the solid colours and in that section I think every style is covered and the one that won probably covers about three different techniques within the whole painting,” he said.

“It was funny as I was going through and judging I wasn’t looking at the names of the artists and it was only after I finished that I realised the two I’d chosen was an artist I’d worked with locally two years ago,” he said.

In the Upper Hunter the art scene is very vibrant and this prize is really good because it is open to everyone throughout Australia, which allows the locals to see how they stand within the broader art world which is great,” Peter Carlin said.
