TAFE Tuesday
TODAY the Scone TAFE is cooking up sausages and serving up advice on the range of courses open for enrollment.
Lynne Ring, from TAFE Scone campus said she encouraged people to visit the TAFE and learn more about the courses on offer.
“It is TAFE enrollment week this week and today we are having TAFE Tuesday with displays here on campus and we’ll be open from 5pm until 8pm tonight with a sausage sizzle,” said Ms Ring.
“We can talk about what courses we offer here and for courses we don’t run in Scone we can still get them information,” she said.
Scone TAFE continues to attract students from throughout the state to study courses in agriculture and the equine industry.
“Our main focus is agriculture we deliver certificate II, III, IV and the diploma of agriculture here on campus, and we also veterinary nursing and animal studies as well, there are lots of new courses for equine being developed,” she said.
“We have a certificate III in farriering which is an apprenticeship course, but we are opening up now to people who are not apprentices who can do it under ‘smart and skilled‘ funding, they do need to have some knowledge of the industry, have some horse handling skills and a mentor within the industry, but you don’t have to be an apprentice to do that course,” she said.
“We are also offering agriculture as an evening class this year, normally it has been run through the day but we are trying to that to a broader cohort of students who might be working in the industry and want to come in of a night to further their knowledge and do some study in the agriculture side of things,” she said.
There are many TAFE courses offered online to make it easier for people to study, but many courses at Scone still require time in the classroom.
“It’s a bit hard to do an online course of how to handle a horse,” laughed Ms Ring.
“You can do the theory of it online, but you also need to be able to touch the horse in a safe manner with experienced staff to guide them,” she said.
“That also goes for riding a quad bike or riding a tractor,” she said.
