Highest Grossing Yearling Sale
“IT has been a record breaking sale, it is actually the highest grossing yearling sale in the history of the Southern Hemisphere,” said Barry Bowditch, general manager of the Magic Millions.
“For book one we grossed in excess of $156 million and an average price of $228,000 and we have sold 90 percent of the horses offered,” he said.
“Of the horses that made over half a million there were 53 of them and 49 of them were from the Hunter Valley studs,” he said.
“The highest was $2million for a colt from Yarraman Park (see: Yarraman Colt Sells for $2 Million), Segenhoe Stud sold a yearling for $1.9 million from I Am Invincible, Arrowfield sold a yearling for $1.8 million a full sister to Sweet Idea lot 733, the Vinery also sold another by I Am Invincible for $1.45 million, Arrowfield lot 591 which made $1 million, lot 647 from Bhima made $1,050,000 and Widden Stud sold the last million dollar horse of the sale which made $1.1 million,” he said.
“So seven of the nine horses which sold for over a million were from the Hunter Valley, they dominated as expected,” he said.
“We had a $10 million race day here and the winner of the race was bred at Widden and part owned by Widden and it was a women’s owned horse which won our $2million race and because it was owned by women it took home another $325,000 as a bonus,” he said.
“Yarraman Park had two winners on the day and Coolmore’s Pierro won the $2 million three year old race with Pierata,” he said.
“I think we are the world leaders, we have a lot of participating internationally at our sale a fair majority of those horses stay in Australia and are raced by the international market in Australia because we do it well, our prizemoney is great and I think we involve the owners into the industry very well,” he said.
“We sold Winx a few years ago here and we sold Redzel the Everest winner, the world sees this and they stand up and notice and they want to be a part of it,” Mr Bowditch said.
