Scone Ladies Golf Open Day, March 30
By Lyn Banks
THE Scone ladies golf Open Day was conducted on Thursday March 30 in inclement conditions, some players got through unscathed but many endured rain for part or much of their round.
There were visitors from most of the Hunter Valley clubs plus players from Quirindi and Mudgee who, along with the Scone ladies, totalled 47 players.
In the first of the Open Days for the Hunter River District ladies golfing season, the Scone club set a high standard with an efficiently conducted event.
The winner of the Manning Cup for the best scratch score was local player Lyn Banks who had 86 to win the event for the second time two shots ahead of Melita Watson from Hunter Valley who beat Hely Vandenbruggen from Cessnock on a countback.
Hely was the nett winner in Division 1 with 70 nett, the runner up being Jules van den Berg (Hunter Valley) with 73 nett and third went to Sue Weis of Merriwa with 36 points.
In Division 2 Judy Carmody had a fine day with 69 nett to be the winner, this score also won her Beryl Phelps’ prize for the best nett by a Scone player and the veterans event.
Pam Manning was the runner up with 71 nett and third place was won by Lorraine Barrett of Aberdeen with 35 points.
Division 3 was played as a stableford event and again the locals had good success.
Sarah Brooks was the winner with 37 points, runner up was Jaine Gulliver of Quirindi on 35 points and third went to Scone player Yvonne Palmer on 34 points.
The NTP on the 2nd was won by Division 1 Lyn Banks 4.58 metres, Division 2 Marie Murray 5 metres, and Division 3 was decided by a lucky draw going to Annie Woods. In the long drive Susan Wilson (Denman) won Division 1, Carol Cockerill-Wright (Mudgee) won Division 2, and Sarah Brooks Division 3.
In the ball competition 30 or more points won a ball and two players from each division also benefited from a lucky card draw.
The club is extremely grateful for the generous sponsorship of many businesses and individuals who allowed lovely prizes to be given, the Helloworld Scone $10, 000 Holiday Hole In One Prize on the 8th hole was not won especially as conditions were heavy for the 157 metre hole.
Those who worked on the course prior to the event, both greens staff and volunteers, are to be commended for their efforts.
Likewise, appreciation is extended to those members who assisted in running the event on the day as their input ensured the event ran smoothly and was enjoyable for all participants.
The next Open Day in the Hunter River District is Aberdeen on Wednesday April 5.
