Local Students Best Herdsmen at EKKA

THE show team of St Joseph’s High School are competing at the Royal Queensland Show and have taken out the title of best herdsmen.

Lisa Bright, head agricultural teacher from St Joseph’s High School Aberdeen said it is the third time in six years the school has won best herdsmen and the students are excited about their achievement.

The team of students from St Joseph’s High School won Best Herdsmen.

“There are more than 30 schools which enter and it is a real feather in our cap; the students are really stocked and love winning this title,” said Ms Bright.

“You are judged on a range of things over two days including the best maintained team, cleanliness and quality of the animals, pride in team appearance, how you present the school and provide information at the stand, so it is a really good exercise for the students and it is fun trying to work out who the secret judge may be,” she laughed.

“The judge said we had great continuity with our theme between the two spaces we have allotted to us and the children were really welcoming,” said Lisa Bright.

St Joseph’s took a team to the Royal Easter Show in Sydney, but shares the opportunity and takes a different group of students to the Royal Queensland Show.

“It is fantastic that we have so many students at the school who want to be part of a show team,” said Ms Bright.

Riley Burgin placed 7th out of more than 130 children in the 16 to 18 year old age group.

“They love it, they absolutely love it and they are up at 5:30 in the morning, work hard with the cattle all day and don’t get back until 7:30 at night, there are not many kids who are willing to work that hard all day, but these kids are and they are excited to get up and do it all again tomorrow,” said Lisa Bright.

In the parade on Monday Riley Bergin placed seventh out of more than 130 children in the 16-18 year old age group and Brooke Clinch was in the finals for the 14-16 year age group competing with 160 other children.

Millie Hall placed third in the 16 to 18 judging; Ethan Martin was highly commended in the 16-18’s and Zac Miller placed sixth in the 14 to 15 year age group.

In the cattle ring St Joseph’s entered three animals and won a second place for junior heifer and also a second for junior steer.
